When should a child first visit the dentist?
The first visit should be when the first teeth erupt or by the child's first birthday, to establish a preventive oral health program.
When do first teeth appear?
First teeth typically erupt between 6 and 8 months. By age 3, all 20 primary teeth will be present. Permanent teeth begin between ages 5 and 7.
When to stop pacifier and bottle use?
Pacifier use should stop by age 3. Bottle use should ideally stop by age 1.
How to prevent early childhood cavities?
Promote breastfeeding until 4-6 months, only put milk or water in bottles, and begin oral hygiene as soon as the first teeth erupt.
Should children receive fluoride?
Yes, through fluoride toothpaste used during brushing from the eruption of the first teeth, as per official recommendations.
How to brush children's teeth?
- 0-3 years: parents brush, 2x/day, with gauze, finger cover or soft brush
- 3-6 years: child brushes progressively under supervision, 2x/day
- >6 years: child brushes under supervision, 2x/day, with soft brush
What are fissure sealants?
A varnish applied to the fissured surfaces of healthy teeth to prevent cavities. Usually recommended for first and second permanent molars.
